Innovation and R&D (European Commission)

The European innovation scorecard is an annual report published by the European Commission. It provides a detailed comparison of innovation within the EU, thanks to the collection of data on investments in R&D, the number of researchers and doctoral students and patent applications. It also provides a European classification system for innovation (the possible ratings are modest, moderate, strong, and leaders). Beyond its presentation in the annual report, the data can be downloaded in Excel format, thanks to an online platform for visualisation which allows you to easily compare two national profiles, and track the developments in recent years.

For a more local analysis, the Commission also offers regional reports which analyse – across a more limited number of indicators – performance in different regions within the country, in order to identify Europe’s motors of innovation.
