How fast is European public transport going green?

Cross-border, data-driven collaborative investigation on the increasing presence of greener buses and fleets in Europe, and the tension between zero-emission goals and the reality of green transition on the ground.

Methodology

This investigation is based on a series of data on transport, pledges, and pollution collected from city councils, local authorities and operators. Some were publicly available in websites and annual reports, whereas others were retrieved through e-mail and phone requests. The dataset was further complemented by some secondary sources, including the International Association of Public Transport's ASSURED Clean Bus Report and the CDP Full Cities Public Data & Separated by Question datasets. The dataset spans from 2010 to 2026 and cover all EU capitals with some additional cities (Antwerp, Lyon, Brno, Ostrava, Košice, Prešov).
