Only three out of ten ambassadors from European Union countries are women

Analysis on the disparities in gender representation among high-ranked diplomats across European Union countries.

Methodology

The database created by the GenDip project at the University of Gothenburg (August 2025 version) classifies ambassadors as male or female based mainly on names and includes only resident ambassadors, excluding other diplomatic roles. The data was checked and corrected for selected countries in 2024, addressing misclassifications and interim appointments. For Italy, GenDip data was combined with Openpolis to track trends in female ambassadors, noting discrepancies where some missions are led by Chargé d’affaires rather than ambassadors.
