Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL)

The Global Human Settlement Layer is a free tool implemented the European Commission, which produces global spatial information about the human presence on the planet over time.

The Global Human Settlement Layer(GHSL) provides evidence-based analytics and knowledge describing the human presence on the planet in the form of built up maps, population density maps and settlement maps.

The framework uses heterogeneous data including global archives of fine-scale satellite imagery, census data, and volunteered geographic information. Data is fully processed automatically and generates analytics and knowledge reporting about the presence of population and built-up infrastructures.

Datasets are downloadable in various formats.
