The number of asylum applicants from Afghanistan to the European Union is declining

New data shows a declining trend in asylum seekers from Afghanistan in the EU.

New data from Eurostat shows a declining trend in asylum seekers from Afghanistan in the European Union. At the end of May 1,582 citizens from Afghanistan had pending asylum applications in the European Union, compared to for example July 2016 when 21,200 applied for asylum.

On average the European Union has seen 4,891 asylum applications from Afghanistan per month since 2008.

Among the countries in the European Union Germany received the most asylum applications from Afghanistan, 912 in May, while Cyprus and Estonia received fewest (0 applications).
