Refugee camps in Greece

The status of the Reception and Identification Centers (RICs) in Eastern Aegean is changing. Until recently the 5 RICs were operating as registration centers, as well as de facto open accommodation sites.

The Greek government, recently, announced its decision to shut them down and build new closed detention centers. We searched and filtered the tweets of the Greek MEPs by using the Greek word «κλειστά» (meaning closed in English).

Eliza Vozemberg (EPP) praises government’s new policies against migrants. She writes that at the closed detention centers will be held the people who are going to be deported. She criticizes the previous government of Syriza for calling the new facilities “Alcatraz”, and for the situation at Moria refugee camp, by stressing that ‘humanity’ it’s not their exclusive preserve.

Dimitrios Papadimoulis (GUE-NGL) shares a photo of the 6 MEPs of Syriza and tweets the question they posed to the European Commission regarding the decision of the Greek government to build closed detention centers-prisons in the islands, as he characteristically says. He compares New Democracy’s plan with Orban’s and Salvini’s policies, by stating that it violates European Union's law.
