According to the latest survey published by the think tank Real Instituto Elcano and Diálogo, a Spanish-French friendship association, the fact that Spaniards belong to the EU is positive for 62 percent of the population (compared to 15 percent who consider it negative), while it is positive for only 40 percent for the French. 28 percent of them believe France's membership of the EU is somewhat negative.
The study analyses different variables as a comparison between the two countries, such as the identification with Europe; the assessment of the impact of the EU on its country; the trust in national and European institutions; the attitude towards the euro; the perception of EU problems; the challenges and objectives; the perception of more influential countries and preferred allies; the main achievements of the EU and disadvantages of belonging to it; the attitude towards the Europeanisation of some policies; the attitude towards increased defence spending in Europe, or the perception of mutual relations and cooperation between France and Spain.
